Interview with Hayden Panettiere and Vanessa Hudgens for Neutrogena Wave for Change

Neutrogena recently invited a few media outlets to their 2nd annual Wave for Change charity event, where Neutrogena Brand Ambassadors Vanessa Hudgens and Hayden Panettiere helped young students from Junior Achievement decorate Disaster Relief Kits. The kits included school supplies as well as Neutrogena products to help students recently affected by the tornadoes in Alabama. The Junior Achievement students personalized the boxes by drawing on them and writing uplifting notes to the Alabama students, just to let them know that someone cares.

Hayden and Vanessa were very hands on with the Junior Achievement students! They both went from table to table, helping the young students decide what to draw or what to write, and even helping them choose colors!

It was also really cool to watch Hayden and Vanessa in a more “private” setting, where their personalities as well as their passion for charity came through. I was in awe of how grounded and cool Hayden is in real life, and surprised by how goofy Vanessa is. In between interviews or as she’s walking around, she busts out in song and dance, livening up the entire place. Plus her new hair cut is super cute!

After watching them interact with the students, I got a chance to interview them. Read on more to find out what they both have to say about their passion for their charities and their admitted beauty/fashion mishaps!

Gloria: Both of you are well known for your charity work. Where did that initial passion stem from?

Hayden: I’ve always grown up loving animals. It’s something that was just bred in me. My family is the same way. I grew up with a lot of animals. I got involved with this when I was so young, [when] I was 15, 16. I met this man named Jeff Pantukhoff, who is the founder and creator of The Whaleman Foundation, which I work with and for, and he showed me what he did. He said, “I know you are a big animal lover, would you like to see what I do?” and he showed me footage of what he did, explained it to me, asked if I wanted to be involved, and I said yes. But originally, when I got involved it was because I saw an animal that needed help. It could have been any animal, absolutely.

When I became much closer to these animals and had these experiences with them, I really started to understand why it’s such an important cause, why it’s so important to protect our environment. That distinct passion started coming into play. You know all these things and unfortunately it’s not until it’s personally knocking at our doors that we start to care. That trash that you throw in the water, until it’s on your front door, you go, “I don’t like this. This needs to change.” We need to make sure that we’re fighting to help our environment before it comes knocking on our doorsteps.

Vanessa: I’ve always loved kids. Even when I was a little tiny girl, I told myself that I wanted to be a pediatrician. Just being around kids and helping kids is something I adore because kids are our future. We’re here today but the little ones are going to take over! I think just helping them out in places in where they can’t help them in making their dreams come true. I just love helping kids!

Neutrogena Moisture Shine lip gloss
Gloria: What beauty products do you always have with you?

Hayden: Lip gloss! Trusty Neutrogena MoistureShine Gloss!

Vanessa: I actually love that one! I have it in my purse!

Hayden: It’s Super Sparkles 100! It’s what I have on. They are fun little products you can just keep in your bag. [I also have the] bronzer blush duo, a 2 in 1, which is great! My bag gets cluttered immediately! I have a pharmacy in my bag!

Vanessa: I always bring those makeup remover wipes. I get lazy a lot of the times! It’s just nice to have with you, like after you’ve flown and feel dirty and just want to clean yourself off. It’s always good to have. It’s very hydrating too, and makes you feel refreshed.

Hayden: You know you’re so tired but you don’t want to take it (makeup) off, but you feel so gross! Then your pillowcase is all whack and destroyed. It just takes 2 seconds to take it off.

Gloria: As for those water splashing Neutrogena commercials, what’s the secret to getting those cool shots?

Hayden: It’s a lot of camera work. Thank goodness we have no problems with epilepsy because there are these lights that just flash really, really fast. It’s like a strobe light! I have very tiny small hands, so to get a tiny scoop of water was always an issue for me. When you’re wet, it’s hard to backtrack. Your eyes are closed, then you’re splashing here, it goes above your head, and sometimes you’re not even wet!

Vanessa: I hate it personally because I have a pet peeve of getting my head wet and [having] water splashing on my head, so it’s definitely no good for me. You step into a whole contraption they’ve set up with light. It’s like a little time travel box you step into! It’s crazy, but it’s fun!

Gloria: Now let’s talk about some beauty and fashion mishaps! What are some of your worst mishaps that you absolutely do not want to happen again?

Hayden: I had a pretty gnarly spray tan at one point. Woooo! The worst part was that I couldn’t wash my face, and the part that came off the most was my chin! My face was tanned but my chin was white! I was like, “What in the world were you thinking?!?” See, I had the spray tan done, but I was going out of the country, so I thought, “Oh well, it’s going to go away quickly. One more coat is fine, but that one coat was…”

Vanessa: No bueno!

Hayden: No bueno… Now for fashion, there are tons! See-through dresses, I’ve been there!

Vanessa: I had a [fashion] mishap just recently. I was shooting a movie and there’s a scene where I have to pee on a pregnancy test strip. There was a toilet and a bath tub right next to me, with the camera man and operator both sitting in the tub. I kind of faked it by pulling down my pants. I had a pair of set underwear and then a pair of nude underwear. One time, I accidentally pulled down my nude underwear! I screamed and laughed hysterically while I’m trying to be serious to take a pregnancy test! I was like, “Please close your eyes!”

It was really fun interviewing both girls. Both Hayden and Vanessa were super open and honest, and they really do believe in fighting for their charities.
