At Creme, we’ve been super, super lucky! Yesterday we met two of the stars of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens, in person in Sydney! The movie is out in cinemas today – and is definitely worth checking out.
We met the duo at their hotel in Sydney, where they were doing a bunch of interviews and then planning to get a bit of free time in at Bondi Beach. In person, they’re both gorgeous, quite small but both smile and laugh a lot. They’re clearly really good friends.
So, here’s how our chat went down!
Congrats on the movie! Was it as much fun to make as it is to watch?
Josh: I think there’s a possibility that it was actually more fun to make than it is to watch! We shot down in Hawaii so it was an amazing location. The whole cast and crew, we really bonded and got really close so we had a very good time making it.

What was the craziest thing you had to do during filming?
Vanessa: for me it was doing a new stunt I hadn’t done before, which is really fun. I got strapped into a harness and plugged into two wires and was taken up to the very top of the soundstage and dropped… And then caught at the very last moment. It was kind of unnerving but made for a great shot.

Whoa, so you’re not afraid of heights then?
vanessa: I am, but I was secure, so I was ok!

What about creepy crawlies – there are some gross bugs in this movie – any fears of those?
Vanessa: Oh yeah I hate bugs! I can deal with snakes and spiders and what not, but when it’s a bug, I am not ok! In one of the scenes, when I’m crawling through a tunnel, I had to flick off one of these massive hissing cockroaches. I was so freaked out! Brad Paton, our director, made me hold one of them so I would get over my fear. I did it! I still don’t like them!

I loved the teeny elephant in the movie – is there anything on the island you wish was actually real?
Josh: Well actually when we shot that scene with the mini elephant, they had a dog – we were actually holding a dog and then later on they gave it ears and a trunk and turned it into an elephant! Yeah, if I could it would be the baby elephant too. It was awesome. How awesome would it be to walk around with that thing on a leash!?!

In the movie, Vanessa, your character takes a while to warm to Sean. What was your connection like in real life between you two?
Josh: We hit it off right away. We’re very much a similar person, when it comes to just wanting to have fun and not caring how silly you look doing it! So that lead to some very exciting times!

Did you know each other before filming?
Josh: Well we met a while ago, before we even knew we were in the movie together at some random events. The first time we actually met was in the chemistry read back in Los Angeles before we started shooting. It was cool. I’d never really gotten to know Vanessa or had a full conversation with her!

If you were stranded on Mysterious Island, who would you most like to be stuck there with?
Vanessa: My boyfriend.
Josh: That’s a wise choice. If I had a girlfriend I’d.probably say her, but seeing as I don’t, it would probably be someone along the lines of Bear Grylls. Yeah, maybe a cute girl version of that!

Vanessa, would you rather be stuck there with Sean from Journey 2, Peeta from The Hunger Games or Josh himself?
Vanessa: Josh! That’s easy. We have so much fun together. We’re kind of crazy.
Josh: And I can play those characters if she needs me to!

What’s the best journey you’ve ever been on?
Josh: I actually took a road trip before we started filming from my home state of Kentucky, all the way to Los Angeles. I went with five of my friends, we had two cars and we went off-roading and camping and that was quite the journey!
Vanessa: I don’t know, there’s been a bunch if things, but probably the journey of High School Musical. I got to go to travel the world and basically do it with my high school friends. It made me feel like the Beatles sometimes, which is crazy, and the beatles are my favourite! It was incredible though, th e people we met, just everything!

Do you have a message for your Creme fans in New Zealand?
Josh: Oh man, I think the message from me is to be yourselves in every situation – to be yourself at school, at home, with your friends, just always be who you are and stay true to your values, no matter what situation you’re thrown into.
Vanessa: That is a good one! I’m just sending all my love to all the Kiwis! I hope that I can one day come out there, because I’ve heard amazing things, but I hope you enjoy the movie!
